Sighting in -1.22°, -81.12°, May 26, 1979

Ecuador

Sighting at sea on May 26, 1979 in -1.22°, -81.12° (Ecuador). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 2:30 a.m. local time, two crew members on watch aboard an escort vessel saw a group of four adjacent echoes on a V 22 radar. Together they formed one large echo with sharp outlines. The observation lasted two to three minutes. The ship was sailing in the Pacific Ocean, north of Chimborazo, a volcano in Ecuador.

The nature of the echo did not match weather interference or multiple reflections off the ships' hulls. It was purely a radar detection: the source mentions no visual sighting.

The GEIPAN classified the case as C, meaning the available data are insufficient to reach a conclusion. The radar echoes remained unidentified.
