Sighting in Abondance, February 22, 1985
Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on February 22, 1985 in Abondance (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).
What happened
At about 7:40 pm, several witnesses noticed an unusual luminous phenomenon in the west, under a clear, starry sky. They described it as a green core from which green arrows extended, with red lights flashing regularly. The phenomenon drifted slowly from west to north, and the sighting lasted about an hour.
Following an appeal for witnesses in the local press, someone came forward to report a similar sighting on 31 January 1985. Four witnesses were involved in all, but only two could be interviewed. The description was precise, and the witnesses' sincerity and credibility were never questioned.
The investigation found that the phenomenon had many features in common with the planet Venus: duration, shape, size, colour and trajectory. Venus was indeed in the part of the sky that was observed and was particularly bright, yet the witness did not mention it. The case, originally classed C by the SEPRA, was re-examined by the GEIPAN and reclassified as A: a low-strangeness case explained as a misidentification of Venus.
