Sighting in Achères, June 22, 2025
Yvelines, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on June 22, 2025 in Achères (Yvelines, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).
What happened
During the night from Saturday to Sunday, a witness was out on their terrace when they noticed a very bright orange glow almost directly overhead. They immediately called over another person who was there, whose reaction showed that the sight was out of the ordinary. The light had no sharp outline and made no sound. It moved quickly at a steady speed on a heading estimated at 300°, then vanished. A photo and videos of the phenomenon exist, but there is only a single testimony, shared by two people.
GEIPAN rated the case as moderately strange and of good consistency. The description and look of the glow match those of a sky lantern. The sighting took place on the night of the Fête de la Musique, and the apparent path of the light followed the local wind direction exactly. The sky lantern hypothesis is therefore strongly favoured, even though the exact origin of the release could not be firmly identified. The case is classed B: probable observation of a sky lantern.
