Sighting in Allèves, December 21, 2014
Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on December 21, 2014 in Allèves (Haute-Savoie, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft contrail (class B).
What happened
At around 6 p.m., as night was falling, three people noticed something in the sky they could not explain, first through the living-room window and then from the terrace. From inside, it looked like a yellow drop of water moving across the sky. The witnesses then went out onto the terrace, where they saw a matte black circular shape that quickly disappeared. They watched with the naked eye and with binoculars.
Only one questionnaire was received, but an on-site investigation made it possible to refine or correct some of the details. What made the case odd was that it came in two successive sequences which, at first glance, did not seem to be the same phenomenon. Based on the witnesses' descriptions, the investigators concluded that a short aircraft contrail was the likely explanation. The three witnesses had watched it in an intermittent way. At first, the sun's rays lit the trail; later, they may no longer have directly lit the part of the sky the aircraft was crossing. A contrail can therefore switch quickly from a bright patch to a dark one. GEIPAN classed the case as B: probable observation of an aircraft contrail.
