Sighting in Allonne, October 9, 2013
Oise, Hauts-de-France, France
Sighting on October 9, 2013 in Allonne (Oise, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).
What happened
At around 5:45 pm, two witnesses noticed a dark object flying in the sky. Its upper part was egg-shaped and its lower part was cylindrical. It was roughly 50 metres up and moved slowly, making no noise at all.
The investigation noted that an object at low altitude, drifting steadily and silently with the wind, strongly suggests a helium-filled balloon, possibly a child's balloon. According to Meteociel, the wind that day was blowing from the west at about 15 km/h. Such balloons come in a wide variety of shapes and, seen against the light in the sky, usually look black. GEIPAN classified the case as category B, a probable helium balloon, and considered it of little strangeness.
