Sighting in Andres, October 21, 1954

Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on October 21, 1954 in Andres (Pas-de-Calais, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At 7:30 p.m., on a dark night with a clear sky and visible stars, two gendarmes watched a very bright luminous trail for no more than fifteen seconds. It crossed the sky at high speed and in complete silence, moving from north to south along a horizontal path. It was shaped like a cone with its point at the front, while the base trailed off into numerous sparks.

The witnesses had ruled out a meteor because of the phenomenon's large size and the horizontal trajectory. According to GEIPAN, they were mistaken: a meteor is most likely what they saw. The case is classified B, a probable sighting of a bolide, meaning a natural meteoroid fragmenting as it entered the atmosphere.
