Sighting in Angicourt, September 20, 2018

Oise, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on September 20, 2018 in Angicourt (Oise, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 9 p.m., a woman driving her car noticed a rectangular or oval object with flashing red and yellow lights. It seemed to hover over the forest. The witness drove on, then came back to the same spot about 45 minutes later, and the object was gone.

The witness gave a brief statement to the gendarmerie, followed by a questionnaire that the gendarmerie only partly filled in. The GEIPAN tried to reach the witness to complete it but received no reply. This was the only account collected.

The gendarmerie noted that the lights described could resemble an aircraft's beacons, and this was the lead the investigation followed. Creil air base reported no flights during the period. A drone flight planned in the area had been cancelled, and a helicopter company authorised to fly at low altitude said it had made no flights that day. The military aircraft, drone and helicopter hypotheses were therefore not supported. However, three civil airliners passed through the area at the times in question. The GEIPAN concluded that the witness had very probably mistaken an aircraft for the object and classed the case as B, a probable misidentification.
