Sighting in Asnières-sur-Seine, June 7, 2014

Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 7, 2014 in Asnières-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

In the evening, at 11:53 pm, the witness saw a group of orange balls in the sky, about twenty by their count. They stayed visible for a few minutes. They seemed almost stationary and moved only very slightly to the witness's left, gradually growing fainter until they went out.

The investigation compared this description with a release of Thai lanterns, of the kind that might follow a party. On this basis, the wind pushed the lanterns slightly westward, away from the witness. Meteociel data for Roissy showed a light west or northwest wind of 13 to 19 km/h. No other witness account was collected. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
