Sighting in Athis-Mons, August 29, 2008
Essonne, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on August 29, 2008 in Athis-Mons (Essonne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
At about 10:45 p.m., the witness was looking out of a closed window when a white light in the north-west caught their attention. It looked like a star, but was much brighter. The sighting lasted only about 6 seconds, during which the light moved, came to a stop and then disappeared. No one else reported seeing it.
The account was collected almost 18 months after the event. The descriptions given all refer to a star, and the case shows little strangeness. They are not fully consistent with each other: one describes a light that was stationary, then briefly accelerated, then stationary again, while another says it moved slowly northward before stopping and vanishing.
GEIPAN concluded that it did not have enough reliable information to reach a conclusion. A star cannot be ruled out: a moving cloud nearby can create an impression of movement, and a gradual fading could then be read as a rapid departure into the distance. A Thai lantern also remains possible. The case is classified C, for insufficient information.
