Sighting in Aubervilliers, February 8, 2015

Seine-Saint-Denis, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on February 8, 2015 in Aubervilliers (Seine-Saint-Denis, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Between midnight and 12:20 a.m., on a weekend night, the witness looked out of a window and noticed a flickering red light. It moved silently and horizontally from right to left. The sighting lasted barely ten seconds: the light abruptly changed direction and then vanished very quickly.

The witness had first reported a movement from the south-west toward the south-east. After the investigators checked with them, it turned out they had been facing west-south-west. Travelling from their right to their left, the light therefore moved more nearly from north-north-west to south-south-east, which is consistent with the north wind recorded at Roissy.

GEIPAN noted that a red light less than 30 m away, crossing the witness's field of view at constant altitude in under a minute, strongly suggests a Thai lantern carried by the wind, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. The case was classified B (probably identified): a Thai lantern, or possibly a luminous balloon.
