Sighting in Avon, July 15, 1983

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 15, 1983 in Avon (Seine-et-Marne, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Over the nights of 14 and 15 July 1983, several witnesses noticed a very bright white object in the sky. It moved slowly from west to east. They watched it for a long time, but none of them could describe its exact shape or size.

Investigators compared the features of the various sightings with the astronomical situation of the sky on those evenings. The two matched an astronomical explanation: the witnesses most likely saw the planet Venus, which was especially visible in that part of the sky on those dates. GEIPAN classified the case as B, probably identified: it was a bright point of light high in the sky.
