Sighting in Beynac, August 15, 2023

Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on August 15, 2023 in Beynac (Haute-Vienne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 10:30 p.m., the witness saw a glow appear in the sky. For about 40 seconds they watched an "object" moving fairly slowly, and took photos of it. They made out a yellow "luminous square" in the lower part and an orange "plume" above it. Both then faded and gave way to a single, much smaller point of light, which kept shrinking before going out all at once.

GEIPAN considered the case to have good consistency: there was only one witness, but the description was precise and one photo could be analysed. The shape and colour described, together with the enlarged photo, point to a sky lantern. The object drifted slowly from the south-west toward the south, which fits the readings from a weather station 8 km away: a very weak wind blowing toward the south-east, averaging 0 km/h with gusts of 6.4 km/h. The abrupt disappearance can be explained by the flame going out. The case was classified B: the witness very probably saw a sky lantern.
