Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on July 22, 2011 in Cagnes-sur-Mer (Alpes-Maritimes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Starting at 10:15 p.m., a witness noticed a red-orange luminous object moving silently across the sky. About ten minutes later, a second similar object passed by in turn. Each sighting lasted around three minutes, and both objects eventually disappeared toward the south-southeast.

The GEIPAN considered the case to be of low strangeness. Its consistency was rated medium to low, since it rests on a single witness account. All the characteristics match a misidentification of passing Thai lanterns. The case was therefore classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
