Sighting in Cergy, July 25, 2013

Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 25, 2013 in Cergy (Val-d'Oise, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At about 3:41 a.m., a worker on a break outside a building noticed three lights moving at a steady speed across a clear sky. They seemed to form a dark triangle. A building was partly blocking the view, so the witness moved and went back and forth twice between two vantage points, but the lights were no longer visible. The sighting had lasted about two minutes.

According to GEIPAN, several explanations are possible for a group of three points of light like this. What made the case odd was mainly how unlikely it was that the witness, the places where the light sources went out and the disc of the Moon would line up. The field investigation showed that three lights drifting together in the direction of the wind were consistent with Thai lanterns. GEIPAN was unable to trace the people who had released them. The case was classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
