Sighting in Chamonix, September 4, 1978

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on September 4, 1978 in Chamonix (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Around 10 p.m., a group of people noticed a luminous object in the sky that caught their attention. It was spherical and white. It moved at about the speed of an aircraft, on a north-south path between the mountain peaks of the area.

After several minutes of observation, an aircraft approached from the opposite direction. The object then climbed vertically, changed color, and vanished into the sky at very high speed. The gendarmerie investigation turned up no further information.

GEIPAN classified the case as B. The noise the witnesses heard, the evasive manoeuvre made as the second aircraft approached, and that aircraft switching on its regulation identification lights led investigators to conclude that the witnesses had probably seen the manoeuvres of a military jet.
