Sighting in Châteaufort, July 10, 2011

Yvelines, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 10, 2011 in Châteaufort (Yvelines, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

Between 12:30 and 12:45 a.m., several people watched about ten orange points of light pass across the sky, together forming a fairly large group. The main witness had the presence of mind to film the scene with a camera while phoning the gendarmerie. Five days later, at 11:22 p.m., the witness saw a similar phenomenon again.

The witness gave the gendarmerie the film of the first sighting, which is typical of a passage of Thai lanterns. The gendarmerie carried out an investigation that the GEIPAN describes as exemplary, and concluded that Thai lanterns were responsible. No formal proof was obtained, but the witness agrees with this conclusion and the GEIPAN fully endorses it. The case is classified A (identified).
