Sighting in Châtillon, August 29, 2015

Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on August 29, 2015 in Châtillon (Hauts-de-Seine, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At around 2 p.m. on a Saturday, a witness who was watching television noticed something moving across the sky. There were four distinct round objects, yellow-orange with a red center, which appeared to make up a single phenomenon. They moved slowly and silently, passed over the building, and were then lost from view. The witness had enough time to take a photograph. Only one account was collected.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the witness had most likely seen objects carried by the wind. Their slow approach and passage over the building, which faces northeast, matched the light northeasterly wind recorded in the weather data. The photos and the description also show rather round shapes, like balloons. The glowing red or orange look could fit Chinese-style sky lanterns, which vary in color and shape, but it could also fit LED balloons filled with helium. GEIPAN classed the case B: probable sighting of balloons.
