Sighting in Châtillon-sur-Indre, March 6, 2011

Indre, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on March 6, 2011 in Châtillon-sur-Indre (Indre, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 10:15 pm, two witnesses saw several red-orange luminous objects cross the sky in a straight line, appearing one after another at intervals. No sound was heard during the observation. The phenomenon was filmed, and photographs were also taken.

The description suggested a passing group of Thai lanterns. The footage supplied by the witness shows a red-orange object very similar to that in other films submitted to GEIPAN, which were definitively shown to be Chinese lanterns. The witness had not ruled out this possibility either, in a letter dated 25 March 2011. After reviewing all the evidence, GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses most probably saw Thai lanterns drifting past, and classified the case B.
