Sighting in Chelles, June 2008
Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France
Sighting in June 2008 in Chelles (Seine-et-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).
What happened
In 2009, a witness reported repeated sightings made from their home: balls of light moving about near Charles de Gaulle airport. They had filmed them between 11 pm and midnight in the first days of summer, at the end of June 2008. The exact date is not known, and 21 June was picked arbitrarily.
The videos show yellow-orange points of light slowly sinking toward the ground. Since the witness said they were looking toward the airspace of Charles de Gaulle airport, GEIPAN concluded these were probably the landing lights of aircraft on approach, seen head-on. Such lights remain visible up to about 30 km in front of the aircraft. Their colour can therefore range from white to yellow-orange depending on distance and atmospheric turbulence. Several aircraft can also be seen at the same time without any way of judging their distance, even relative to each other, and perspective can make the points seem to draw together until they touch, or to move apart.
GEIPAN classified the case B: probable sighting of aircraft seen head-on, close to landing. Because the witness gave neither precise dates nor precise viewing directions, GEIPAN could not take the investigation any further.
