Sighting in Clairvaux-les-Lacs, May 17, 2010

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on May 17, 2010 in Clairvaux-les-Lacs (Jura, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 9:45 p.m., a couple saw a burning, triangular object slowly falling through the sky. The main witness thought it was a microlight aircraft on fire and crashing. A second object, which looked like a torch, broke away from the first. No other witness account was collected.

The gendarmerie carried out extensive searches, which ruled out the possibility of a microlight crash. The investigation then considered that the witnesses may have mistaken the fall of space debris for something else, since the appearance and the duration of the sighting could fit. A catalogued piece of debris (29569 DELTA 4 DEB) did re-enter the atmosphere that day, but its orbital inclination of 98° does not match the direction of the observation, toward the east-northeast. This hypothesis therefore could not be confirmed. GEIPAN classified the case as "C": there was not enough information to reach a conclusion.
