Sighting in Clamart, November 5, 2022
Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on November 5, 2022 in Clamart (Hauts-de-Seine, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class A).
What happened
One evening at around 10:42 p.m., the witness was at home when they noticed an intriguing display of light in the sky. Round or oval patches of light, arranged in a triangle, moved back and forth like a ping-pong ball, steadily and continuously at a moderate speed. They eventually merged into a single central circle. This sequence lasted about two minutes, after which the lights stayed motionless for at least an hour. They were white with a bluish tint, and no noise was reported. The sky was covered by a low layer of cloud.
There was only one witness, but they completed the questionnaire and supplied good-quality photos and a video, so the case is considered to have good consistency.
The investigation concluded that the witness very probably saw the impact spots, on the cloud layer, of single-beam ground-based searchlights ("skyrose"). Such projectors generally reach more than 10 km, can be controlled automatically or by hand, and can produce fixed or moving beams, independent or not, of up to about 240,000 lumens, giving a sweeping effect just as the witness described. The witness found it odd that no beam was visible; there was no precipitation, so no beam could form. They also found the prolonged stillness odd; the light show could have been paused temporarily (adjustments, end of the show before switching off...). The evening was a Saturday. GEIPAN classified the case as A.
