Sighting in Claye-Souilly, July 31, 2014

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 31, 2014 in Claye-Souilly (Seine-et-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11:45 p.m., from their apartment, a witness noticed a bright orange object shaped like a flattened rugby ball moving across the night sky. The witness saw the same thing happen three times in a row. Each time, red-orange balls crossed the sky silently over a few minutes, following the same path. During this movement, one of them stopped partway along its course.

The movement was from north to south, which matches the light north wind recorded at Roissy. The stop could correspond to the object passing over a feature of the terrain, such as woods or the Fosses Maloré hill. The witness provided original photos, which are consistent with the explanation reached.

GEIPAN compared these silent balls, all following the same trajectory, to Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. It therefore classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
