Sighting in Clichy, July 6, 2015

Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 6, 2015 in Clichy (Hauts-de-Seine, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The witness saw several luminous phenomena appear one after another in the sky and filmed them. This was the only account received. The case is fairly complex, because the video shows two different types of phenomena.

The first was stationary and lay due west. It was the planet Venus, clearly visible around the 30-second mark of the video. Jupiter can be faintly made out slightly to the right, at the same height in the sky. Both planets set that night at 11:45 pm.

The other phenomena moved. They travelled slowly and unevenly from the west toward the south, as yellow or orange-yellow lights. The witness likened them to a large aircraft headlight coming straight at them from the horizon. The apparent splitting of a light could be two aircraft whose paths merge and then diverge. The changes in brightness could come from changes in the aircraft's heading, since a headlight looks stronger the more directly the observer is in line with the aircraft. Aircraft approaching an airfield look like this, because beyond roughly 15 km their flashing lights are much less visible than their landing lights.

The GEIPAN received the account too late to compare it with air traffic records, so the hypothesis could not be strictly confirmed. The fixed lights were identified as Venus and Jupiter. The case is classified C for the moving lights, which appear to be aircraft seen head-on, because the information is insufficient.
