Sighting in Colombes, October 31, 2014

Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on October 31, 2014 in Colombes (Hauts-de-Seine, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The witness saw orange luminous shapes cross the night sky in under a minute, on a weekend. They moved from south to north-east. According to the witness, crossing a large part of the sky took about 12 seconds, and the path showed some instability. The witness later made a video reconstruction of what they had seen.

The investigation first compared the sighting to a Thai lantern, released nearby at the end of a private party, possibly connected with Halloween. Weather records showed a light wind of 4 to 7 km/h, from the south at Orly and the south-east at Toussus and Pontoise. The direction of travel the witness described, towards the north and east, could be consistent with the local wind, although the proximity of the Seine made it hard to estimate precisely. Uneven local winds could account for the instability. However, the speed of the movement fitted poorly with a light wind, and the behaviour described did not suit a lantern well.

Because the exact weather was not known and there was no corroborating information, the GEIPAN classed the case as C, insufficient data.
