Sighting in Compiègne, January 1, 1980

Oise, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on January 1, 1980 in Compiègne (Oise, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

Several military personnel on duty saw a luminous phenomenon in the sky three times during the night. A small orange ball appeared suddenly, first at 11:16 pm, then at 11:33 pm and again at 11:46 pm. An intense glow came with it, and it moved slowly along a horizontal path each time. It always showed up in the same spot.

Every time it appeared, the dogs in the base kennel howled. The object made no noise and left no smoke as it moved. The servicemen were certain that the light was not coming from an aircraft or a helicopter.

No civilians witnessed the phenomenon. GEIPAN classified the case as D, meaning unexplained. Its conclusion describes the periodic sighting of a luminous ball moving slowly in a straight line.
