Sighting in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, December 5, 2014

Yvelines, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on December 5, 2014 in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine (Yvelines, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

One evening, between 7:45 and 7:50 pm, a witness out for a walk noticed five very bright red-orange lights crossing the night sky without making any sound. No other account was collected. The lights moved from west to east and crossed the sky within a few minutes.

The following day was a holiday, Saint Nicholas' Day. According to the investigation, these orange globes strongly suggest Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The direction of travel matches the light south-westerly to westerly wind recorded at Pontoise. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
