Sighting in Courbevoie, March 12, 2015
Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on March 12, 2015 in Courbevoie (Hauts-de-Seine, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).
What happened
At 7:45 p.m., the witness noticed two lights in the sky, at first stationary, and filmed them. The first light then began to move and vanished behind the buildings, quickly followed by the second, which took exactly the same path. The witness was looking northwest, 85° to the right of the Total tower at La Défense.
A check of civil air traffic, based on the Flightradar record, showed that at that very moment two flights descending toward Roissy were in the witness's line of sight, before turning slightly northward. The video fits this explanation entirely.
The GEIPAN points out that an aircraft preparing to land, seen head-on, can be spotted from more than 20 km away thanks to its landing lights, which make the flashing lights and the red and green position lights almost invisible to the eye. These powerful lights have a fairly narrow beam, so once the aircraft is no longer pointing toward the observer, they can no longer be seen. The case was classified A: observation of aircraft on descent.
