Sighting in Domancy, May 11, 2013

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on May 11, 2013 in Domancy (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

On a Saturday evening, at around 11:45 pm, a driver and their son saw about forty red balls in the sky. The objects moved silently.

The witness's account suggested Thai lanterns, and the date and time fitted the moments when such lanterns are commonly released. As is often the case, the estimates of the objects' distance and size were very inaccurate.

After the event was reported in the newspaper, a person came forward to the gendarmerie. They had released Thai lanterns into the sky over the town that evening, during the party held for their wedding. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A, fully identified: the witnesses had seen Thai lanterns.
