Sighting in Évreux, February 20, 2011

Eure, Normandie, France

Sighting on February 20, 2011 in Évreux (Eure, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At 9:05 pm, a driver saw a bright, almost fluorescent green glow crossing the sky. As it moved, the glow split into three spheres, and then everything vanished.

The GEIPAN investigation found that the description matched a fairly typical meteor: green light, a straight path, a luminous trail and a duration of only a few seconds. The fragmentation seen here is not always present in such events. The object responsible could have been a small piece of satellite debris, but a natural origin, a meteorite, was considered more likely. The case was classified B: probably identified, as the passage of a meteor.
