Sighting in Évry, December 24, 2015

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on December 24, 2015 in Évry (Essonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At 6:10 pm, three people were in an apartment on the 10th floor of a building when they saw a luminous object cross the sky without making any noise. It kept changing colour, shifting between green, blue and orange. The sighting lasted 45 seconds. The object passed directly over the witnesses and then disappeared behind the building. Only one account was collected from the three people.

GEIPAN noted that a multicoloured object flying at low altitude on a festive evening suggests something lighter than air carried by the wind. The weather record for Orly showed a south-westerly wind, which is consistent with the way the object moved. The multiple, changing colours point to an LED light-up balloon, a type of party balloon that is becoming more and more common. The case was classified B: probable sighting of an LED party balloon.
