Sighting in Èze, May 16, 2014

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on May 16, 2014 in Èze (Alpes-Maritimes, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

At around 9:15 p.m., a witness took two photographs of a white, spherical light in the sky. The way the light kept appearing and disappearing puzzled them. The observation lasted five minutes. The witness also filmed the scene, but GEIPAN never received the video; only the two photographs were sent in. No other witness account was reported.

The investigation compared the observation data with the local situation. The measured azimuth of the phenomenon crosses the approach path of aircraft heading for Nice airport, and its altitude matches that of planes on approach. At the distance of the sighting, only the landing light or lights could be made out. The case was therefore classified A: the object was definitely an airliner on approach to Nice airport.
