Sighting in Fontainebleau, June 20, 2006

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 20, 2006 in Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11:30 p.m., a witness in the forest noticed a cream-white luminous disc crossing the sky. It followed a straight path from west to east at a steady speed. The witness heard no particular sound during the observation, which lasted two to three minutes.

GEIPAN considered the phenomenon not very strange: a point of light drifting across the sky in the direction of the wind is consistent with a Thai lantern, probably released during a solstice celebration. The oval shape and cream colour fit this explanation, and in the dark of night any light looks white to an observer. The case was classified B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
