Sighting in Fontainebleau, October 29, 2023

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on October 29, 2023 in Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an animal or natural object (bird, insect, pollen…) (class B).

What happened

In the late afternoon, around 4:55 p.m., the witness was at home when they saw a "dance of four points of light". The points looked like four bright white stars and moved erratically, with no apparent logic. After about three minutes, they vanished all at once.

The witness provided a reconstructed photo, taken from the place of the observation, in which they reproduced the unidentified aerospace phenomena (UAP) they had seen. There were no other witnesses and no actual photo or video of the phenomena, so the case's consistency was rated as medium.

The remote investigation, supplemented by a telephone interview with the witness, looked at several hypotheses and kept only one: a flight of birds such as egrets. Although hard to prove formally, it plausibly accounts for most of the features described. The birds' color and seemingly erratic paths fit the "four big moving stars" the witness mentioned. The sky was cloudy with bright breaks, and the phenomenon occurred inside one of them, so white birds lit by the Sun could have stood out sharply against the dark gray background. Their sudden disappearance may have come from the birds passing into a shadowed area, where distance made them invisible. Finally, in the direction the witness indicated, there are two wetlands housing colonies of wading birds such as egrets. GEIPAN classified the case as B: a probable flight of egrets in a beam of light between two clouds.
