Sighting in Fontenay-en-Parisis, September 5, 2010

Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on September 5, 2010 in Fontenay-en-Parisis (Val-d'Oise, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

A family watched three luminous spheres pass overhead in the night from Saturday to Sunday, between 1:10 and 1:30 a.m. The spheres moved across the sky without making any sound. One of the witnesses took photographs with a mobile phone.

The light was orange-yellow and not dazzling. Other lights of the same kind followed the first ones. They travelled at a steady speed, in a direction consistent with the wind.

GEIPAN considered that these features (an observation after midnight, a soft light, no noise, a regular drift with the wind) pointed to a release of Thai lanterns. The village hall was also rented for the same period, possibly for a wedding or a party. The town hall was contacted for further information but never replied. The case was therefore classified B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
