Sighting in Fontenay-le-Fleury, July 21, 1980

Yvelines, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 21, 1980 in Fontenay-le-Fleury (Yvelines, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

At 6:25 a.m., from their fifth-floor apartment, the witness noticed an orange glow in a clear sky. They stepped out onto the balcony and then made out a bright orange half-sphere. The object stayed stationary for a minute, then moved off in a straight line and disappeared. The gendarmerie gathered no further information.

The case was originally rated "C" by GEPAN, under the name SAINT-CYR L'ÉCOLE, and was recently re-examined. It remains thin: a single witness and a short observation, although the description is fairly precise. The witness's sincerity and credibility were never questioned. The shape, size and color described match those of the Sun, which was indeed present in the part of the sky observed. The issue is not the witness's perception but how they interpreted what they saw, based on their impression of it, since the Sun was seen through clouds. GEIPAN therefore rated the case "A": a misidentification of the Sun, with a low level of strangeness.
