Sighting in Fontenay-sous-Bois, June 3, 2010

Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 3, 2010 in Fontenay-sous-Bois (Val-de-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At 7:28 a.m., a witness watched a white sphere cross the sky for about ten seconds. The object was small and flew above the buildings, then quickly vanished from view, hidden by the urban landscape. The witness heard no noise during the sighting and described a path running from north to south. No other testimony was gathered about the event, and the witness did not wish to file a report with the gendarmerie.

The questionnaire the main witness sent back to the GEIPAN was detailed, and its description strongly suggests an object lighter than air, such as a weather balloon or another kind of balloon. The weather at Roissy at the time showed a light northerly wind, between 360° and 10°, which fits the north-south trajectory the witness described. The GEIPAN classified the case as B (probably identified): the witness most likely saw a balloon, meteorological or otherwise, drifting past.
