Sighting in Fréjus, September 25, 2010

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on September 25, 2010 in Fréjus (Var, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11:30 p.m., a witness standing in their garden saw eight orange balls go by. They flew without making any noise and all travelled in the same direction, from west to east. They appeared in successive waves and then disappeared. The sighting lasted between fifteen and twenty minutes. The witness later made drawings and a reconstruction of what they had seen.

GEIPAN's investigation compared these details with a known phenomenon, the release of flying lanterns: several silent orange balls moving the same way, seen in groups and then vanishing, over roughly a quarter of an hour. The date and time, a Saturday-to-Sunday night around midnight, also fit, as do the witness's drawings. The wind was blowing from the northwest (310°), consistent with the direction of travel the witness described. The level of strangeness of the observation is low. GEIPAN concluded that the witness probably saw Thai lanterns passing over and classified the case B (probably identified).
