Sighting in Fresse-sur-Moselle, September 1, 2012

Vosges, Grand Est, France

Sighting on September 1, 2012 in Fresse-sur-Moselle (Vosges, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

A witness was intrigued by a yellow luminous circle moving about in a cloudy sky. It travelled horizontally and silently, and appeared to come and go within the clouds. The observation lasted nearly half an hour. No other witness came forward.

The description suggested a discotheque spotlight, all the more so since Saturday evening is a likely time for that kind of light show. The gendarmerie investigation did not find any nearby venue that could have produced one, but such beams can sometimes be seen from more than 10 km away. GEIPAN classed this case, which it considered not very strange, as category B: a probable observation of a laser-type light animation.
