Sighting in Gagny, June 27, 2016

Seine-Saint-Denis, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 27, 2016 in Gagny (Seine-Saint-Denis, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

At around 9 p.m., a witness noticed a glow coming from an object that was rising through the sky. The object was spinning on itself and followed an irregular path. The witness took photographs, and the object eventually vanished into the clouds.

This was the only testimony collected, but it was consistent and provided enough usable information. Seven photographs exist, and they could be partly used in the analysis. The investigation combined weather data (wind, clouds) with processing of the witness's photos using the IPACO software. This analysis established that the witness had very probably seen a novelty Mylar balloon, one to two metres long, carried along by the wind. The witness could not recognise it, probably because they had never seen anything like it before, or not under similar conditions. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A (identified).
