Sighting in Gentilly, May 31, 1979

Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on May 31, 1979 in Gentilly (Val-de-Marne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

Shortly before one in the morning, two witnesses noticed a luminous phenomenon in the sky, due west. For several minutes they watched a large, orange, crescent-shaped object. A second object also appeared, but only for a brief moment.

The investigation checked the sky chart for that night. Due west were Jupiter, the star Pollux and the Moon, which was setting and was by far the brightest of the three. GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses had observed this group of celestial bodies: a moonset together with a conjunction of planets. The case was classified A, meaning identified.
