Sighting in Gif-sur-Yvette, December 5, 2003
Essonne, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on December 5, 2003 in Gif-sur-Yvette (Essonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the Moon (class B).
What happened
The witness reported this observation in June 2014, almost ten years after it happened. One evening, between 8:00 and 8:30 pm, they were on the phone with a friend, standing facing the window. In a clear sky, they noticed an oval, white, motionless shape very close to the Moon. It was about the same size as the Moon, and had the same color and brightness. The glow soon vanished; the sighting lasted 15 to 20 seconds. No other witness was found.
GEIPAN considered the case to be of low strangeness and low consistency: a short sighting, a single witness, no photo, a late report, a Moon position described by the witness that differed from its actual position, and the atmospheric conditions. The long delay had almost certainly caused memory errors, notably about the starry sky and the position of the Moon. The investigation concluded that this was probably an observation of a paraselene, an atmospheric optical phenomenon. The case was classified B.
