Sighting in Gif-sur-Yvette, April 9, 2011

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on April 9, 2011 in Gif-sur-Yvette (Essonne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Around 10:45 pm, two witnesses riding in a car caught a very brief glimpse of several white lights that seemed to come from a dark object. It was moving right next to the roof of a neighbouring house. The group of lights looked close and drifted by very slowly. No noise could be heard from inside the vehicle. The lights then vanished behind the roof. The two witnesses got out of the car and tried to find the object again, but without success.

The investigation found that many explanations remain compatible with the sighting: aircraft, helicopters, or Thai lanterns, although these are usually known for being yellow, orange or red. Only the atmospheric re-entry of a meteoroid or space debris, and the passage of a satellite, could be ruled out. Thai lanterns would fit well if the witness had noted yellow or orange lights. GEIPAN considered the case to have low consistency and low strangeness, and could not reach a clear conclusion. It was classified C (insufficient data) because of the vagueness of the testimony.
