Sighting in Haucourt-Moulaine, December 18, 1979

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on December 18, 1979 in Haucourt-Moulaine (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A family of five, the parents and three children aged 10 to 13, watched three luminous discs in the night sky above a school for about fifteen minutes, starting at 2:14 a.m. The discs went out and came back on. Depending on the witness, their colour ranged from white to orange or reddish-orange, and some did not mention a colour. The father said the discs were rising in the sky, and the mother had the impression they were. Two of the children mentioned no movement. A third did not describe any vertical movement either, but was the only one to see one of the discs break away from the others.

The five statements boil down to almost the same sentence. Nothing is known about where the discs were in the sky, their apparent size, their orientation, how sharp their outlines were, or how they disappeared. The mother and the children had gone back to bed while the discs were still visible.

GEIPAN re-examined the case, which had first been rated D. With so little to go on, it could not look for an explanation, and follow-up interviews or reconstructions were no longer possible decades later. It noted how sparse and alike the statements were, and that the father had already made many sightings of saucers. His strong feelings may have influenced the others, whom he woke by shouting. GEIPAN classified the case C, for lack of reliable information.
