Sighting in Iles-des-Pins, July 10, 2011

France

Sighting on July 10, 2011 in Iles-des-Pins (France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

Several people on the Île des Pins, in New Caledonia, reported the same phenomenon at around 5:30 pm. A round object had crossed the sky diagonally on a path that took it down toward the sea. The witnesses noticed several colors in it, along with a trail behind it. They heard no sound. Just before the phenomenon vanished completely, a white flash was seen.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the witnesses most likely saw a bolide, caused by a meteorite or a piece of space debris falling. The accounts differ from one person to another, but they fit this type of phenomenon well. Since there is no proof of the object's exact origin, the case was classified B: probable meteorite fall.
