Sighting in Issy-les-Moulineaux, March 29, 2008
Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on March 29, 2008 in Issy-les-Moulineaux (Hauts-de-Seine, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).
What happened
At around 7:05 or 7:10 pm, a witness noticed three dark, round objects passing silently across the sky. They were travelling from south to north and were soon hidden by the urban landscape. The sighting lasted about 30 seconds.
The investigation noted several objective elements: the objects were rounded, they moved along the same axis as the wind (south to north), their maximum possible size was estimated at roughly 1 to 3 m, and their maximum possible altitude at the zenith at roughly 30 to 38.5 m. Their colour and appearance resembled those of a transparent balloon. The altitude estimates given by the witness differed greatly from the calculations made in the report, and the release area could not be determined.
GEIPAN concluded that the objects were being carried by the wind, most likely balloons whose nature and place of release remained unknown. The case was classified B, probable observation of balloons of unknown origin.
