Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, France

What happened

A couple watched a very bright ball in the sky for about four minutes one evening. Its apparent size was similar to that of a petanque ball. It crossed the sky from east to west at about the speed of an aircraft. At one point it gave off reddish projections, then it vanished abruptly.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B, probably identified. The investigation concluded that the witnesses saw a round luminous object moving at the speed of an aircraft. The observation lasted somewhat longer than would be typical, but the features described match those of an atmospheric re-entry.
