Sighting in Juvisy-sur-Orge, September 3, 2011

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on September 3, 2011 in Juvisy-sur-Orge (Essonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 10:50 p.m., from a balcony with a panoramic view over the Seine, the witness saw about a dozen balls arranged in a pyramid. The formation moved silently, in the opposite direction to the usual path of aircraft descending toward Orly. By the time the witness had picked up their camcorder, some of the objects had vanished. Only two remained, and they quickly moved away, climbing toward a large cloud before disappearing as well.

The investigation found that this observation closely matches what is typically reported when Thai lanterns are released. Several details support this: the red colour of the envelope, the movement as a group, the upward and/or wind-driven drift (a light easterly wind that evening), the disappearance through the lanterns going out after a few minutes, and the timing of the sighting, a Saturday evening. GEIPAN classified the case as B, a probable observation of Thai lanterns.
