Sighting in Juvisy-sur-Orge, July 25, 2014

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 25, 2014 in Juvisy-sur-Orge (Essonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At about 11:20 pm, a group of witnesses saw five to seven lights pass silently over a forest. The lights then gained altitude, made a loop and disappeared.

GEIPAN considers the case very typical of Thai lantern releases. Several points support this: the red colour of the envelope, the movement as a group, the rise and/or drift with the wind, the lights going out after a few minutes, and the day and time of the sighting (a Friday evening). The wind was blowing from the north that evening, and the movement towards the south, in the direction of Grigny and Évry, fits the north wind recorded at Orly at the time. The lanterns probably flew over the Seine and met some turbulence there.

GEIPAN classed the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
