Sighting in Kanfen, July 12, 2020

Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on July 12, 2020 in Kanfen (Moselle, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

At around 9:22 p.m., two witnesses were in their garden when they saw an unfamiliar white object cross the sky. It was round, and its apparent size was similar to that of an airliner, or slightly larger. It moved in a straight line without making any noise, at an apparent speed higher than that of an airliner, and left no condensation trail. At one point it passed behind a cloud. One of the witnesses filmed it with a mobile phone. Only one witness account was collected.

After analysis, the case showed low strangeness and good consistency: two witnesses, a single and fairly precise account, and a video. The investigation concluded that the witnesses had mistaken a private business jet, a Cessna 750 Citation X, for something unknown. The trajectory seen in the video strongly suggests an aircraft flying at altitude. A reconstruction on Flightradar24 showed that a Cessna 750 Citation X was in the sky at that moment, on a trajectory very similar to that of the object. The lack of a trail, which understandably struck the witnesses as odd, is explained: in the atmospheric conditions the aircraft was flying in, it could not produce one. Its apparent speed, higher than that of an airliner, and its angular height were also consistent with the observation. GEIPAN classified the case as A.
