Sighting in La Foa, March 1984

France

Sighting in March 1984 in La Foa (France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

On 7 March 1984, the gendarmerie was told that several residents of the same neighbourhood had repeatedly seen luminous phenomena in the sky. It stepped in because of this rumour, since no witness had come forward on their own. Several sightings made on different dates were recorded in a single report, and each one was examined separately.

This case concerns a witness who, from home, saw a broad band of light light up the sky intensely on three occasions. They said it looked like a very bright object passing from right to left above the trees facing their house. They could not recall the exact date and placed the events one or two days earlier, in March 1984. They first thought it signalled a change in the weather, though they remained shaken. Another person named in their statement was questioned but had seen nothing.

The GEIPAN considers this account to have very little substance, especially after thirty-five years. The information is vague, and the strangeness appears rather low. It cannot rule out that vehicle headlight beams projected into the sky produced the effect, an impression that may then have grown in retrospect. The case is classified C: it cannot be used because reliable information is lacking.
